TAMPA - Local fossil hunters will provide a glimpse into Florida's past with a two-day display of the creatures that roamed the state 14,000 years ago.
The Tampa Bay Fossil Club will hold its 22nd FossilFest on March 7 and 8 at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
The displays will feature the Ice Age fossils of creatures such as sabertooth cats and mastodons, along with dinner plate-sized teeth from the Megalodon shark, as well as artifacts from the prehistoric people who shared Florida with ancestors of armadillos the size of a small car.
In addition to the displays and vendors selling fossils, there will be daily seminars on how to legally hunt for fossils and identify and preserve your finds.
Another feature is an area where children can dig through a sand pit to uncover and keep fossils donated by members who will help them identify their find.
The show will be at the fairgrounds' special events center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 7 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 8. Admission is $5; free for ages 12 and younger.
