The opposing points of view expressed by writers Amity Shlaes and Karl Frisch regarding the effectiveness of FDR's New Deal policies (Views, Feb. 15) resulted in a textbook conservative vs. liberal comparison on the debate of issues in 2009 American politics.
The true role of a government in a free society is to foster growth by enacting programs and policies that allow people to grow personally and professionally.
The New Deal should have been a reach out to those who truly help grow the economy, entrepreneurs and manufacturers who invest money and through effort, not give-aways, create economic growth. Instead, the New Deal and the 2009 Same Old Deal filters money through government bureaucracy which, as almost anyone from here to Alaska has complained, is the most inefficient use of dollars outside of lotteries and other forms of gambling.
This stimulus is the high-stakes version of the guy at the track who has lost all day and tries to make it up on one huge bet, but then makes his pick by closing his eyes and poking his racing form with a pen point.
My hopes are high as I want the best for America, but my senses tell me that we are in for a long and unrewarding horse race.
