TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly beating in North Tampa late Wednesday.
Deputies found Lewis Clayton, 38, beaten at the Avalon Village apartments, 14514 Hensel Lane, about 11:30 p.m., sheriff's office spokesman J.D. Callaway said.
Clayton and another man had argued outside the complex about 10 p.m. Deputies aren't sure what the fight was about, Callaway said.
About 45 minutes to an hour later, a group of six or more people confronted Clayton outside his apartment, Callaway said. It isn't known whether the initial person Clayton argued with was among those men. A fight began, and the men pummeled Clayton, detectives said.
Clayton was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m. He had "obvious trauma to the upper body," Callaway said.
An investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (813) 247-8200.
