Residents Line Up To Adopt Rescued Dogs

Published: February 19, 2009

LARGO - The first 10 from a group of dogs rescued from a North Carolina puppy mill this month were up for adoption Wednesday at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay. About 30 cars lined up outside the gate for a chance to adopt the dogs.

The poodles and Pomeranians won't be heading out any time soon. Rather, prospective owners filled out adoption paperwork, hoping to be one of the 10 accepted for dog ownership.

The shelter is at 9099 130th Ave. N. in Largo.

The adoption fee is $150, said Nora Hawkins, marketing director for the chapter. That covers some of the cost of veterinary care for the rescued dogs.

Strawberry Festival Offers Free Show

PLANT CITY - The Florida Strawberry Festival will offer a free show to replace the canceled March 8 performance of singer and dancer Julianne Hough.

The festival scrambled to find a new act after Hough's show was canceled last week due to scheduling problems. The replacement will include singer and songwriter Trent Tomlinson; a new group, Love and Theft; and Chad Brock and Killer Beaz, from the morning show of country radio station WQYK, 99.5 FM.

Brock, best known perhaps in this market for his role on the morning show, has also produced seven singles on the Billboard country music charts, including the No. 1 hit "Yes!" and the top 5 "Ordinary Life." Fairly new to the Tampa Bay morning show scene, Killer Beaz has 27 years in stage, television, radio and touring. He will perform a comedy routine.

General admission seating for the 3 p.m. show is free with paid gate admission.

For information, go to www.flstrawberryfestival.com or call (813) 752-9194.

Developer Presents Vision For Guida House

TAMPA - One developer answered the city's call for proposals to refurbish and make public use of the historic Guida House at Macfarlane Park.

Earth First Development Corp. of Tampa envisions public and nonprofit agencies hosting programs related to education, child development, health and wellness, financial literacy and job search assistance at a rehabilitated Guida House.

The company also proposes building a three-story structure on the property for a Hillsborough County Head Start program and another nonprofit group which works with young people and foster children.

Additionally, the developer wants to erect two apartment buildings with a total of eight residences.

The project, including parking lots, would cost $3.5 million. About $458,000 of that amount would be used to rehabilitate the 1951 Guida House.

If city staff members support the project, it would go before Mayor Pam Iorio and the Tampa City Council for their consideration.

Putnam Declares For State Post

BARTOW - On the steps of Polk County's historic courthouse, U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam officially announced Wednesday that he is running for Florida commissioner of agriculture.

He made his announcement in front of a crowd of more than 100 friends, family members and supporters. His parents, siblings, wife and four children were there, as was former state Rep. Dennis Ross, who has said he will run for Putnam's seat. Ross said he would make his formal announcement next week.

There has been speculation about Putnam's political future since November, when he stepped down as the third-most-powerful Republican in the House of Representatives.

Putnam, 34, said Wednesday that the commissioner of agriculture position is the job he has been preparing for all his life. Putnam is from Bartow, where his family grows citrus and raises cattle. Five generations of his family have farmed in Florida, and as a youngster he would show off livestock for the 4-H Club.

County Targets 'Swingers Club'

NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco County is suing a local business that bills itself as "Tampa Bay's premier swingers club."

County officials filed a lawsuit this month against Club Elite and its owners, Eric and Angie Kubb, saying they are violating local zoning codes.

On Feb. 2, the county filed the suit against the club and its owners in Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court, asking a judge to put a stop to sexually-themed performances or shows featuring "specified anatomical areas." The county claims the Kubbs are violating local zoning ordinances by running a sexually oriented business.

Since the club opened in September 2007, the complaints have been rolling in - so many that in November 2007, the Pasco sheriff's office began an undercover investigation that continued until April.

The club is in the second story of a strip mall on U.S. 19 in Port Richey, just north of the Gulf View Square mall. There are a bakery, dentist office, deli and other businesses on the first level.
