PEORIA, Ariz. - Ken Griffey Jr. has decided to return to the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners announced the move Wednesday night. The 39-year-old star's contract is for one year and believed to be worth $2 million in base salary, plus incentives.
Earlier in the day, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that an apparent agreement with the Atlanta Braves had fallen through. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Mariners had yet to announce the deal.
Griffey is fifth on baseball's career home run list with 611.
ATHLETICS: Pitcher Brad Ziegler learned late Tuesday he made Team USA for the World Baseball Classic in March.
BRAVES: Atlanta agreed on a $2.825 million, one-year contract with second baseman Kelly Johnson, avoiding a salary arbitration hearing.
MARLINS: The Miami city commission has moved up the date of its next meeting on a new ballpark to March 4. Miami-Dade County commissioners are scheduled to consider the plan March 5.
METS: Shea Stadium, the circular modern stadium that hosted two World Series title winners but was criticized for its lack of charm and amenities, met its end Wednesday. It was 44.
NATIONALS: Outfielder Josh Willingham and Washington agreed to a 2009 contract worth $2.95 million, avoiding an arbitration hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
