TIA May Get New Southwest Airlines Route To Boston

Published: February 19, 2009

Southwest Airlines said today it will serve Boston's Logan International Airport by autumn, raising hopes locally that Tampa could be one of the destinations in the first or second round of new flights.

Southwest got its start more than 37 years ago by avoiding major metropolitan airports with heavy traffic and fees. It serves the Boston area through airports in Manchester, N.H., and Providence R.I., both of which have flights from Tampa International Airport.

While Southwest does not plan to announce the first airports it will serve from Boston until spring, Tampa could be among likely destinations along with Chicago, Baltimore, Orlando, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, aviation consulting analyst Dan Kaspar of LECG LLC told The Boston Globe.

"Boston is among our top markets," Tampa International director Louis Miller said. "There's a good chance they would serve Tampa."

Tampa already has competitive daily non-stop service with Boston with four JetBlue Airways flights, three by Delta Air Lines and one by AirTran Airways, Miller said.
