An 83-year-old Winter Haven man thought to be missing and endangered has been found safe, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said today.
Detectives are on their way to speak to Harry W. Ames, who told a friend Friday he was going to Eagle Ridge Mall to buy a watch battery and hadn't been heard from since. A relative reported Ames missing on Friday night, saying had begun showing signs of confusion and is in the early stages of dementia.
Ames returned home about 5 a.m. today after driving around all night, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said. He did not know where he had been and had no idea he had been reported missing.
He hadn't made it to the mall, so his son planned to take him there today to buy the watch battery, Wood said.
