Even as numbers sank statewide, Hillsborough County remained one of Florida's top destinations for newcomers in 2008 when compared with other Florida counties.
The county ranked first among former residents of two regions with eight states each, the South and the West, an Associated Press breakdown of driver's license applications shows. Hillsborough ranked second among newcomers from South Atlantic states and Washington, D.C., and third among people from Midwest and Great Plains states, according to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
The county's rankings in all four regions were the same in 2003.
Hillsborough fell out of Florida's top three among former Pacific states residents, with whom it ranked third in 2003.
Pinellas County fell from first-choice destination among Midwest and Great Plains residents in 2003 to second in 2008. And, after finishing third among people from the New England and West regions in 2003, it dropped out of the top three in both in 2008.
No other Bay area counties made the top three lists among newcomers from the eight U.S. regions or a ninth group, foreign countries.
