PLANT CITY - The U.S. Postal Service is asking if the city would be interested in buying its downtown facility at 301 W. Reynolds St. or an adjoining parking lot.
In a report to be delivered at Monday night's Plant City Commission meeting, City Manager David Sollenberger states that postal officials inquired about the city's interest in the properties, including the building or the parking lot on the west side of Thomas Street.
The post office is across the street from City Hall, 302 W. Reynolds St.
The inquiry is preliminary at this stage, and no decision has been made, according to Sollenberger's report. The agency is studying relocation of the facility's retail postal operations to a downtown storefront, Sollenberger said.
Nationwide, the U.S. Postal Service is experiencing sharp declines in revenue, due partly to increased use of e-mail and online payment of bills.
Gary Sawtelle, a Tampa-based spokesman for the postal service, said he was unaware of any plans to sell the downtown Plant City site but added that all real estate matters are handled by the agency's Atlanta office.
Sollenberger's report indicates he told the postal service he would not recommend the city buy the property.
The postal service has another location in Plant City, at 2501 Walden Woods Drive.
