Lightning center and No. 1 overall pick Steven Stamkos is making the transition this season from junior star to NHL regular. Throughout the season, the 18-year-old from Markham, Ontario, will share his experiences with Tribune writer Erik Erlendsson to give readers an insight into a new way of life during his rookie journey.
The organization still has the puck from my hat trick on Tuesday night against Chicago and they usually do a pretty good job of framing it up. I have my first game, first goal and first assist puck hanging up at my place and they did a great job of framing that up in a plaque, so they said they would do the same thing with that puck. I think that's a pretty classy move.
My walls are pretty plain in my place so I tried to spruce them up with a couple of hockey pucks. That's my ideal art work.
I didn't bring down too many memorabilia items from home, maybe a couple of photo albums and stuff like that. It's always nice when you have a little bit of down time to go back and look at stuff like that and bring back some good memories. Other than that, I don't have too many things around the place.
One thing I have started doing is collecting some sticks. Some of the guys told me that one thing they regretted doing was not picking up sticks throughout their career. I've only got a couple so far, but I thought that was a pretty good idea. Being so young and playing in the NHL, you get the chance to play against some guys you idolize growing up. One of those guys for me is Joe Sakic, so to be able to get his stick personalized is pretty special. I'm going to try to get as many of the great players that I can right now and hopefully continue that throughout my career.
Right now, I've got my first goal stick and Vinny's Lecavalier stick from his assist on my first goal. I've got Evgeni Malkin and Sakic plus Los Angeles' Drew Doughty and Toronto's Luke Schenn. That's all I've got so far.
I asked for Alex Ovechkin's at the All-Star event but I didn't get a chance to get it. Hopefully he still remembers me before the end of his career.
