Ready, Bucs fans? You be the general manager.

The NFL free agency period begins at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 27. For seven consecutive days, The Tampa Tribune and TBO.com (Keyword: Bucs) will feature one position each day. We'll provide an analysis and list the players to consider: Bucs under contract for 2009, and Bucs and notable NFL players scheduled to become free agents.

The Bucs are roughly $40 million under the projected $123 million salary cap, so they have money to spend.

What would you do?

RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers desperately need to break their trend of having only one good receiver a year.

There have never been two players with more than 1,000 yards receiving in one season throughout Tampa Bay's history. The closest the team came was 1998, when Bruce Hill had 1,040 receiving yards and nine touchdowns and Mark Carrier added 970 yards and five touchdowns.

Tampa Bay has virtually locked up Antonio Bryant with the franchise tag, but needs another player to complement him. Joey Galloway is still the fastest player on the team and could thrive once again if given an opportunity. Michael Clayton is a potential free agent with only one good season on his resume, while Ike Hilliard is a solid veteran.

Tight end Jerramy Stevens arguably has the best hands on the team, but was underutilized and due to become a free agent. If Tampa Bay does not re-sign Stevens, that leaves Alex Smith and John Gilmore.

Bucs Under Contract For 2009

WR Brian Clark: Emerged on special teams, coaches love his potential.

WR Joey Galloway: Still could be a standout player, given a chance.

WR Ike Hilliard: Always reliable, no young receiver has unseated him.

WR Dexter Jackson: Second-round pick in 2008 has plenty to prove.

WR Micheal Spurlock: Slowly becoming the odd man out.

WR Maurice Stovall: Great on special teams, but absent as a receiver.

WR Paris Warren: Loads of potential before 2007 foot injury derailed career.

TE John Gilmore: Solid pro with run blocking skills, unselfish attitude.

TE Alex Smith: Has one more season to validate 2005 third-round pick.

Bucs Potential Free Agents

WR Antonio Bryant: Could be even better if not team's only threat.

WR Michael Clayton: Will only re-sign if Bucs throw him the ball.

TE Jerramy Stevens: Stayed out of trouble and produced, wants payday.

NFL Potential Free Agents

WR Bobby Engram, Seahawks: Injury prone, but had 1,000 yards in 2007.

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Bengals: Paired with Bryant and dominance begins.

WR Devery Henderson, Saints: Deep-threat playmaker worth consideration.

WR Lance Moore, Saints: Restricted FA is better than most in the draft.

WR Shaun McDonald, Lions: Had nearly 1,000 yards in 2007.

WR Nate Washington, Steelers: Deep threat was Pittsburgh's No.3 receiver.

TE Owen Daniels, Texans: Best TE on the market, but a restricted FA.

TE Jim Kleinsasser, Vikings: Blocking aided RB Adrian Peterson's performance.

TE L.J. Smith, Eagles: Gets open, but astonishing tendency to drop passes.
