An 8-year-old Dade City boy remains in critical condition this afternoon after the vehicle he was in crashed into a tractor-trailer on Old Lakeland Highway in Zephyrhills, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver of the 2004 Dodge, Docky Cook, 62, died at the scene of the crash near Lynbrook Drive, troopers say. The boy, Spencer Harrellson, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.
The crash occurred about 7:40 a.m. today. A tractor-trailer driven by Donald Stevenson of Durant was heading south on Old Lakeland Highway, and Cook's Dodge was heading north.
Stevenson tried to slow down for a slower vehicle but failed to maintain control, troopers say. The tractor-trailer jackknifed into the Dodge's path, striking the vehicle. The vehicles came to rest in a ditch.
Stevenson suffered minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
