A fire that swept through part of a building early today has been attributed to a short circuit in the building's electrical panel, Dunedin fire officials say.
Firefighters were called to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America building at 1476 Pinehurst Road at about 4:15 a.m. today, said Bill McElligott, fire marshal for the Dunedin Fire Department.
Firefighters on their way back from a different call spotted the fire, McElligott said. Firefighters confined the blaze to the part of the roof that covers the kitchen, plus the kitchen itself, with a damage estimate of roughly $75,000, McElligott said.
The Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America is a nationwide philanthropic organization whose membership is open to anyone who can trace their ancestry to the Aegean Greek Islands of Icaria or Fournoi. The group's local chapter has been housed at 1476 Pinehurst Road.
