The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating 13 to 20 car break-ins that occurred overnight in a residential neighborhood in Madeira Beach, authorities said. There also might have been a few additional car burglaries in nearby Indian Shores.
The vast majority of the break-ins being handled by the sheriff's office were at residences on Johns Pass Avenue, sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
All of the cars broken into either late Sunday or early today were unlocked, Bordner said. Loose change, GPS systems and at least one laptop computer were taken, he said.
Bordner used the thefts as a reminder to car owners to lock their vehicles at night.
"If they find an locked car, they move on," Bordner said of the typical car burglar.
Johns Pass Avenue is not to be confused with the John's Pass Village & Boardwalk, which is some distance away, Bordner said.
