Brochures and Web sites might be helpful, but Sarasota residents have a new way to stay on top of the latest news about their city.
The City of Sarasota is using the free social network Twitter to update its residents. City officials began sending short messages, called tweets, today.
City officials plan to tweet holiday closings, storm information, changes in the solid waste collection schedule, new programming on Access Sarasota and other pertinent information via the service.
"We're excited about tweeting," said Public Information Officer Jan Thornburg in a news release. "Many municipalities are discovering it's an effective tool. Just recently, Oklahoma City used Twitter to keep their residents informed during a severe ice storm. It will have many uses and I hope people start following the City of Sarasota on Twitter."
Visitors to the city's Web site, www.sarasotagov.com, will be able to sign up for the free service and register to get the city's tweets.
