FONTANA, Calif. - The race went the distance this time, but that didn't matter to Matt Kenseth.
One week after winning the rain-shortened Daytona 500, Kenseth made it 2-for-2 to open the Sprint Cup season by capturing the Auto Club 500 on Sunday night, his third victory at Fontana's 2-mile oval.
Kenseth overcame four short rain delays to become the first driver since Jeff Gordon in 1997 to win the season's first two races.
Kenseth took the lead from Gordon in the pits with 38 laps to go in the 250-lap race and stayed ahead in a battle of former series champions, pulling away over the final 20 laps.
