TAMPA - Looking for a free meal? Head to the nearest IHOP for a good cause.
The International House of Pancakes is offering customers one free short stack of three buttermilk pancakes until 10 p.m. today.
Organizers hope customers will make a donation to the Children's Miracle Network. The restaurant chain hopes to raise $1 million for the charity this year. Last year, the giveaway raised $875,000.
Today is National Pancake Day. The tradition of eating pancakes dates back several centuries to when the English would prepare for Lent, according to IHOP's Web site. Strict rules prohibited the eating of dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up eggs, milk, butter and other products, the Web site says. That's how it came to be known as Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday.
