An employee of a Pinellas County roofing business accused of filing second mortgages without homeowners' consent was arrested today on fraud charges.
The state Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement has charged Peter Wozniak, 69, of Largo with seven counts of false or fraudulent acknowledgements by a notary public. He is being held tonight on $14,000 bail at Pinellas County Jail.
Investigators say Wozniak asked homeowners to sign contracts on installment payments for roof repairs. He would then notarize the signatures and, without the homeowners' consent, file second mortgages to the Hillsborough County Clerk's Office in the name of his business Home Improvement Services, investigators say.
Wozniak was investigated by the state for three years. Authorities say seven homeowners have been victimized, but there may be more cases.
Anyone with information on the investigation can call the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement at 1-800-342-5869.
