A man pretended to deposit $2 million at an ATM and then withdrew a hunk of money from a woman's account, the Polk County Sheriff's Office says.
A surveillance video shows the thief depositing four envelopes into the victim's account at the ATM at the Mid-Florida Credit Union, 1090 Wedgewood Estates Blvd. in north Lakeland, on Dec. 16, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said.
The man claimed the envelopes contained $2 million, but they were actually empty, Eleazer said.
The man then withdrew an undisclosed amount of money from the same account and fled, she said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kara Preston at (863) 297-1167 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
