A Lakeland man was shot by three officers after he pointed a shotgun at them, police said.
Bruce Wooley, 58, survived the shooting and was conscious and talking when he was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center for treatment, Sgt. Terri Smith said.
Wooley was home alone at 4515 Micanope Crescent Drive at 11:41 p.m. Wednesday when he called his sister in North Carolina and told her he was "armed and wanted to die" but didn't want "to do it," according to a news release from the Lakeland Police Department. Wooley's sister called police, who surrounded the house and called Wooley to talk to him by telephone, Smith said.
Wooley told police he was OK and did not intent to harm himself but "wanted to get some beer." Wooley left his house with a shotgun, got into his vehicle and began driving erratically through the neighborhood, Smith said. Wooley then returned home, got out of his vehicle and pointed the shotgun at police, Smith said.
Three officers fired at Wooley, striking him an unknown number of times. They disarmed him and discovered he had two other guns, including one in a shoulder holster, Smith said. It appeared Wooley had been drinking, Smith said.
Wooley's family is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed.
The three officers are on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation, police said.
