Two Seffner roommates have been charged with attempted first-degree murder after deputies say one of the men shot a 14-year-old boy who was taking out the trash.
Sauvallie Hagins Jr., a student at Jennings Middle School, was shot three times Monday night at the Claymore Estates apartment complex in Seffner. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent four hours of surgery. At a news conference Tuesday afternoon outside the hospital, Tasha Hagins said her son was shot in the stomach, leg and groin area.
Hillsborough County deputies arrested Quintin Jacobi Hobbs, 25, and Jermaine Daval Smith, 34, at 5:26 p.m. Wednesday. The men live at 506 Calhoun Ave.
Hobbs was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. Smith was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.
Smith remained in Falkenburg Road Jail today. No bail has been set.
Hobbs remained in Orient Road Jail today. No bail has been set.
The bullets probably were not meant for Hagins, deputies said this week.
Davontae Davis, a teenager who also lives in the apartments at 5005 Claymore Drive, said he was the shooter's intended target.
Deputies agree. They say Davis' brother robbed Hobbs about 2 a.m. Feb. 5, when Hobbs returned from a store. Davis' brother, who was armed, took Hobbs' cash and jewelry, valued at a combined $2,300, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
Davis' brother was arrested for robbery in the case. His name was not immediately available.
On Monday, Smith saw Davontae Davis and told Hobbs that the teenager was in his neighborhood, deputies say. Davontae Davis came back to his apartment complex, Claymore Apartments, and that's when Hobbs fired three to four shots, Carter said.
"Hagins was not the intended victim," a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office news release states.
Hobbs is charged with the attempted murder of Davis and Hagins, Carter said. Smith is charged with attempted murder because deputies say he was with Hobbs during the shooting.
Tasha Hagins, 33, said she moved to the Seffner apartment complex in November with Sauvallie and his sisters, Taqueisha Gilchrist, 16, Alexus Hagins, 13, and Sandy Hagins, 8, because it was far from the bustle and congestion of Tampa.
She said she thought it was a better community. She said she had just completed cosmetology school and wanted a better life for her children.
Sauvallie loves football and is an outgoing teen, she said.
"We're very thankful for the hospital, the doctors, the nurses, the goodness of God," Hagins said Tuesday. "My son is recovering. I'm just thankful."
