A family's grief over the loss of a relative was compounded Thursday when a memorial candle caught their house on fire.
The fire happened about 10:15 a.m. at 10209 N. 23rd St. Investigators said the family had been burning candles in memory of a recently deceased relative. When Yandrey Perez, 31, went to a store, he left a candle burning.
When he returned, the house was on fire. The candle apparently had set fire to the dresser on which it sat, and the flames quickly spread throughout the bedroom.
About two dozen firefighters responded from stations in Sulphur Springs, North Tampa, Seminole Heights and Robles Park.
Damage is estimated at about $70,000.
