A Pinellas sheriff's deputy has been suspended for eight hours after he continued chasing a vehicle, even though a supervisor had cancelled the pursuit, according to Pinellas County Sheriff's Office memo released this morning.
Cpl. James Cooper served his suspension on Feb. 18, the memo says.
Cooper had admitted that on Aug. 11 he continued driving at speeds well over the speed limit after the pursuit was cancelled by a shift commander, the memo says.
In addition, Cooper told a deputy who was unaware that the pursuit was terminated that the deputy should strike the fleeing suspect's vehicle with his own cruiser to stop it, the memo says. The deputy was unaware of the shift commander's order because he was on a different radio channel.
