A detention sergeant at the Pinellas County Jail was demoted to the rank of deputy after he took a television out of an inmate pod to punish unruly inmates, then misrepresented the damage he had done to the television in the process, according to memorandums released this morning by the sheriff's office.
Former Sgt. Shane Stradley was also suspended for 80 hours, the memorandums say.
Stradley took a television from the pod Dec. 1, and when he did so, he ripped the power cord out of the TV, the memorandums say. In a report on the incident, Stradley wrote that the cord had been "altered" before he went into the pod, the memorandums say. When confronted by a supervisor Dec. 10, Stradley admitted his report was not accurate.
