Two Kmart stores in St. Petersburg will close in May as Kmart's parent company shuts underperforming stores.
Sears Holdings Corp., which owns Kmart and Sears stores, plans to shut two Kmart locations, at 3951 34th St. South and at 2800 34th St. North, on May 24. A total of 108 employees will be let go, according to a state Web site of mass layoffs.
Many of the employees will be considered for other jobs within Sears Holdings, while some will be eligible for severance packages, said company spokeswoman Kim Freely.
According to the state Agency for Workforce Innovation, the company also is planning to close Kmart stores in Winter Park and Coral Springs.
