The Tampa Tribune Outdoors Expo & Boat Show kicks off today at 1 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds east of Tampa. As always, the first day of the show offers free admission.
Though access is free, guests get a full complement of show activities, including 17 seminars, clinics and how-to sessions on four stages.
Among today's headliners are captain Bill Miller of "Hooked On Fishing," airing weekly on BHSN, Channel 47, who appears at 3 p.m., and "Reel Animals" stars Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson from Channel 8, appearing at 4 p.m. Clinics on tarpon fishing with Chet Jennings, trout and redfish with Dave Markett, and fly fishing with Ed Jaworowski, Brad Lowman, Chris Myers and Rick Grassett are also scheduled. Mark Nichols, inventor of the DOA Shrimp, is at the casting pond at 1:30 p.m.
For bass anglers - and those who just love to watch wild fish underwater - bass pro Keith Johnson presents clinics at the Bass Tub aquarium at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.
Most of the angling pros return to their booths after their sessions and are glad to sign autographs and provide one-on-one tips.
Today's guests also get first crack at the wares of some 140 vendors, selling everything from half-priced rods and reels to $100,000 offshore boats. The show runs today from 1 to 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, the show features the annual kids fishing derbies hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as Devore Labs dog training sessions and free SCUBA lessons in a 25,000-gallon tank. Admission is $8 for adults on these days, free for children 12 and under. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For details, go to TBO.com, Keyword: Outdoors Expo.
