Goals can't be reached with vague plans.
Saying "I'll try to get more exercise this year" won't work as well as saying "Monday and Wednesday morning at 6 a.m., I will pull myself out of bed and go for a half-hour walk with my friend Chris before I jump in the shower to get ready for work."
If you're feeling stuck on generalities, try these two simple strategic plans for better health:
•Eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day, no longer than four or five hours between meals or a snack.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that people who went more than five hours between meals ate almost 100 calories more each day than those who ate meals four hours apart. Skipping meals or long stretches between meals leads to lower-quality, higher-calorie food choices.
•Eat: a) At home every night this week; b) at the kitchen table; c) with the television turned off; d) and have pleasant conversation with those with whom I share my meal.
Research shows that people eat far fewer calories and higher quality meals prepared at home.
