Man Dies From Gunshot Outside Bartow Liquor Store

A 23-year-old man died of a gunshot wound to the head in a vehicle outside a Bartow liquor store Wednesday night, police said.

Jernard West was shot about 11:10 p.m. outside the XYZ Liquor store, 295 U.S. 17 S., police said. He later died at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Tony Sullivan Jr., 18, and a 16-year-old came to the scene after investigators arrived and told police they were in the vehicle during the shooting. They said West, for "unknown reasons, put the gun to his head and inadvertently shot himself," shortly before midnight, police said.
