PALM BEACH - A $10,000 statue stolen from the Palm Beach estate of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff has been found, with a message.
Palm Beach police said the copper sculpture of two seated lifeguards was discovered Wednesday in shrubs a few blocks from Madoff's $9.4 million home.
A note attached to it read, in part: "Bernie the Swindler, Lesson: Return stolen property to rightful owners."
Police said the statue did not appear to have been damaged, and the investigation continues. It was reported missing Dec. 22.
Madoff is accused of scamming major banks, charities, retirees and some of the wealthiest investors in the world in a $50 billion Ponzi scheme. The Wall Street money manager is on house arrest in his Manhattan apartment.
