ST. PETERSBURG - A 35-year-old man was killed New Year's Eve after he crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into another vehicle.

Curtis Ronald Godfrey of 636 25th Ave. S. was declared dead at the scene of the accident, which took place shortly before midnight on 22nd Avenue South, St. Petersburg police said.

A police report said Godfrey was driving west in the median lane at an "excessive rate of speed" when he crossed a double yellow line to pass another car on the left. His 1990 Cadillac collided with a 2003 GMC Envoy driven by Albert Hill, 50, of 2303 7th Ave. S., St. Petersburg, who was headed east, police said.

The impact sent both vehicles into a spin, and Godfrey's car hit a water pipe and wooden fence before coming to rest.

The occupants of the GMC were taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

No charges were filed. Alcohol was not a factor, police said.
