The African American Heritage Society of East Pasco County Inc. kicked off its Kwanzaa celebration last week with the Fourth Annual Miss Kwanzaa Pageant. Sha 'Vante' Lanaye Bennett, left, of Hernando High School, Janasha Brown of Pasco High School and Shar' Vae Bennett of Hernando High competed in the Miss Kwanzaa Pageant held at the American Legion Hall in Dade City on Dec. 26.
Kwanzaa is an African-American and Pan African cultural holiday that is celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. There are seven principles that are observed and discussed each day.
On the first night, a candle was lit representing the principle of unity (Umoja).
The other principles celebrated include: self-determination (Kujichagulia); collective work and responsibility (Ujima); economics (Ujamaa); purpose (Nia) and creativity (Kuumba).
