Seven Polk County detention deputies were injured this morning after a work van flipped on U.S. 17, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Two of the deputies – driver Samone D. Scott, 21, and passenger Kevin Schuttler, 23, suffered serious injuries. Both were listed in stable condition this afternoon at Bartow Regional Medical Center, agency spokeswoman Carrie Eleazersaid.
The crash is still under investigation.
According to Eleazer, Scott was northbound about 6:45 a.m. when she crossed the center median into the southbound lane just south of State Road 640.
The van struck a boat being hauled by a truck, then flipped and rolled onto the west shoulder of the southbound lane, Eleazer said. The truck driver was not hurt and the truck was not damaged.
The southbound lane was closed for about two hours, with traffic diverted onto County Road 555 and County Road 630.
Investigators do not yet know why the deputy crossed the median, Eleazer said.
The van is used daily to shuttle detention deputies between personal vehicles parked at the Central County Jail in Bartow to the South County Jail in Frostproof.
