NEW PORT RICHEY - Crystal Rusaw had scheduled a Jan. 9 Caesarean delivery for her second child, but Pasco County's first baby of 2009 had other ideas.
Antonio Larry Rusaw waited until everyone in his family had gone to bed before starting his way into the world. His mother's water broke about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, shortly after she had put her year-old daughter, Jasmine, to bed.
"I had just laid down," Rusaw said Thursday afternoon as she recovered in her room at Community Hospital in New Port Richey.
Rusaw was spending the night at her mother's when she went into labor. Family members gave her a ride to the hospital for Antonio's 8:08 a.m. birth.
Rusaw dozed in her bed New Year's Day while her newborn son did the same in a bassinet nearby. Rusaw's sister and brother-in-law, Tiffany and Michael Zullo, recovered enough from ringing in the new year to work the phones from Rusaw's hospital room.
"This is the first boy in the family since my brother," said Tiffany, 22, who has three daughters of her own. She said her 19-year-old brother will add another girl to the growing family in the spring.
Asked how she felt having her baby born on such a momentous day, Rusaw smiled.
"It's nice," she said.
Close behind Antonio, Pasco's second baby of 2009, a girl, was born at 9:29 a.m. at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills. Martha Yarethzi Bartolón Arguello was born to Ingris Arguello and Raymundo Bartolón Soto of Dade City. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 19 inches.
