Seffner Christian Comes Up Short In Morrison

Published: January 3, 2009

Seffner Christian is sort of a big fish in a small pond, a solid basketball team that usually has its way with most of its fellow Class 1A foes. So Crusaders coach Greg Fawbush has no hesitation into peppering his schedule with larger schools.

"This is the sixth game against a Class 5A or bigger school. It helps us but we are still not executing the way we know we can. So we use this as experience.

"There are some schools that are bigger than [Naples] that we played last year that won't play us again. Most schools that play us know they can beat us. But it's not the results today that count; it's who is playing longer at the end of the season."

It's a good thing Fawbush has that attitude because the result against Naples in the final day of the two-day, four-game Ashley Morrison Memorial tournament at Ridgewood wasn't so great for Seffner Christian as the Crusaders fell for the second game in as many days, this time 48-36.

The result was enough for Fawbush to have an impromptu practice. Apparently the Crusaders enjoyed the Christmas break a little too much and as a result have become rusty. So as soon as the Crusaders got back to campus Saturday, Fawbush was putting Seffner Christian through a previously unscheduled practice.

Naples proved to be too much in the long run. Sabrina Whiting pulled the Crusaders within 40-32 with 59 seconds left in the game on a steal and a layup. But a couple of turnovers and solid free throw shooting by Naples prevented Seffner Christian from making a comeback.

"We have had so many [teammates] out of town for Christmas break and we've kind of gotten lazy," Jenny Moorer said. "We need to work on turnovers, that's our biggest weakness. We need to get the ball down the floor now. But we're determined to work harder to get better."

"We're out of shape and we will work on that right now," Fawbush said. "These girls got out of shape during the Christmas break and we will take care of that right now."
