Sunlake Wins Wildcat Duals Wrestling Tourney

WESLEY CHAPEL - Sunlake outwrestled eight other area schools to win the Wildcat Duals wrestling tournament at Wesley Chapel on Saturday. The Seahawks defeated Wiregrass Ranch 42-29 in the finals.

Wiregrass Ranch jumped out early, leading 12-0 after the first three matches before the Seahawks won the next five, three by forfeit, to take a 27-12 lead.

Wiregrass Ranch got within 4 at 33-29 behind quick pins in the 112-pound and the 119-pound classes before Luke Peterson sealed the win for Sunlake with a pin in the 135-pound class with only one match remaining. Sunlake held off Wiregrass in the final match to finish the scoring.

The schools were divided into two, 5-team pools to determine which teams would face-off in the finals. The field of nine had a round-robin style of matches as three mats were spread across the gymnasium, crowded with eager wrestlers and onlookers.

Medals were awarded to individuals as tournament champions of each weight class. Northside Christian's Dalton Dennis was named the tournament's best individual wrestler as he scored pins in all five of his matches, dominating the 125-pound class. Wiregrass Ranch had three medal-winners: Michael Holt (119-pound), Eric Madden (130-pound) and Zach Morales (160-pound).

Wiregrass Ranch won all of its division matches, beating-out defending champ Mitchell by one team win. Land O' Lakes finished third with a 2-2 mark.

Sunlake breezed through its pool undefeated while Brooksville Hernando finished second with one loss. Host Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills rounded-out the pool which became a 4-team pool when Hudson withdrew.

"[The tournament] went pretty good," said Wesley Chapel coach Abel Robinson. "We would have liked to have had a full 10-team meet, but it went well and we had a good turnout."
