A man walking along 20th Street West in Bradenton was hit on the head with a plank of wood and stabbed in the stomach tonight during a robbery attempt, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
Thomas Richard Kearney, 42, was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the sheriff's office said.
Kearney was walking on 20th Street West near 53rd Avenue about 7 p.m. when a man approached him and said, "Give me everything you got," deputies say.
The assailant then hit Kearney on the head with a 2x4 plank of wood, the sheriff's office said. Kearney told deputies that he struggled with the assailant and tried to take the wood away from him.
The assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed Kearney, deputies say. The man ran away and Kearney walked to his house, where his girlfriend called 911.
Deputies continue to investigate the incident.
