Published: January 4, 2009

Seven Polk County detention deputies were injured Saturday morning after a work van used to shuttle them between jails flipped on U.S. 17, the sheriff's office said.

Two deputies - driver Samone D. Scott, 21, and passenger Kevin Schuttler, 23, suffered serious injuries, said Polk sheriff's office spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer. Both were listed in stable condition late Saturday afternoon at Bartow Regional Medical Center, she said.

According to Eleazer, Scott was driving the van north about 6:45 a.m. when she crossed the center median into the southbound lane just south of State Road 640. The van struck a boat being hauled by a truck, then flipped and rolled. The crash, including what caused Scott to cross the median, was being investigated.
