On Feb. 17, broadcast television stations will send only digital TV signals. To prepare, WFLA, News Channel 8, and some other local stations will conduct tests. If you see a notice on your screen during the upcoming three- to five-minute tests, you need a converter box.
Most boxes cost $40 to $80 each at retailers. To apply for a $40 coupon for a box, go to www.dtv2009
.gov. The home page urges applications by Dec. 31, but the deadline is March 31. All households are eligible to request up to two coupons.
WFLA test times are:
•Tuesday - 7 a.m.
•Jan. 12 - 9 a.m.
•Jan. 17 - 7 p.m.
•Jan. 21 - 1 p.m.
•Feb. 13 - 2 p.m.
•Feb. 15 - 8 p.m.
The News Channel 8 phone bank will accept calls during the tests. Call 1-800- 528-0808. You can also e-mail your questions to dtvanswers@wfla.com.
Keyword: DTV, for information about the conversion.
