EGMONT KEY
•Situated at the mouth of Tampa Bay, southwest of Fort DeSoto State Park. It's about 1.6 miles long and less than a half-mile wide.
•Despite being in waters off Pinellas and Manatee counties, it's part of Hillsborough County because it lies in the Port of Tampa shipping channel.
•First visited by Spanish explorers in the late 1500s, British surveyors in the 1700s named the island after Earl of Egmont.
•Designated a National Wildlife Refuge in 1974.
