ZEPHYRHILLS - Local historians Louie and David Holt will talk about the Cummer and Sons Cypress Co. Lacoochee sawmill at a meeting of the Zephyrhills Historical Association on Tuesday.
The Cummer and Sons mill operated from 1922 to 1959 and dominated life in the small, rural hamlet of Lacoochee, in northeast Pasco County. At its peak, the sawmill employed more than 1,100 employees and had the largest payroll in the county. Lacoochee's fortunes have dwindled since the mill closed.
The Holts recently completed a a 30-minute documentary about the mill, using old film footage and photographs shot while it was still in operation.
The historical society will hold a business meeting at 6 p.m., and the program about the sawmill will start at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Zephyrhills Depot Museum, 39110 South Ave., and is open to the public.
