The Tampa/St. Petersburg area ranks 14th among domestic destinations for 2009 travel bookings, a survey of 547 Travel Leaders travel agencies reports.
Las Vegas edged Orlando as the top domestic destination while Chicago rose 10 places to number 10.
The election of Chicago's hometown President-elect Barack Obama may have renewed interest in the Windy City, the report by the company formerly known as Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates said.
The report said nearly 41 percent of the Travel Leaders owners reported travelers are shortening their trips and 21.6 percent are checking into different "tiers" of accommodations than they did previously to save money.
It said travelers are being flexible with dates of travel, staying at properties providing "all inclusive" packages, using frequent flyer miles, taking a cruise and booking only if there is a promotion or a deal.
Mexico ranked first in best travel value beyond the United States, followed by "cruising" and visiting the Caribbean.
