Bankruptcies Soar

U.S. consumer bankruptcy filings jumped nearly 33 percent in 2008 amid a recession that's expected to keep filings rising into the new year. Overall, consumer filings reached 1,064,927 last year, up from 801,840 in 2007, according to data collected by the National Bankruptcy Research Center and published by the American Bankruptcy Institute, an Alexandria, Va.-based research group.
Cigna To Cut 1,100

Managed care provider Cigna says it will cut about 4 percent of its work force, or roughly 1,100 jobs, because of the slumping economy.
Cigna joins competitors Aetna Inc. and UnitedHealth Group Inc. in trimming staff. Aetna said last month it would cut 1,000 jobs, or nearly 3 percent of its work force, and UnitedHealth announced plans to cut 4,000 jobs last July.

Construction Rises

Construction spending fell less than expected in November as record activity on nonresidential projects helped offset another steep decline in housing. Construction spending fell 0.6 percent in November, the Commerce Department reported Monday, less than half of the 1.3 percent decline economists had expected.

Although housing took another sharp tumble, dropping 4.2 percent, this was partially offset by a surprisingly strong 0.7 percent rise in nonresidential activity.
