Officer Adam Carroll was treated at Tampa General Hospital after receiving a bloody nose during the incident about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, a report states.
Carroll and his trainer, Officer Danone Lindsey, pulled over a 1997 Nissan Altima in the 4000 block of West Iowa Avenue. Police said the driver, Tyrone J. Molina, 22, of Tampa, had a suspended license.
Molina ran from the car and was tackled by Carroll, police said. He kicked Carroll in the face about four times and broke free and ran through the neighborhood after being Tasered by Lindsey. Carroll tried to Taser Molina but missed.
Within moments, Carroll tackled Molina again.
Police say they found five pieces of crack cocaine in a prescription bottle Molina tossed from his pocket. And there was a small amount of marijuana and a loaded .38-caliber handgun in the Nissan, they said.
Molina complained of chest pains and was examined at Tampa General.
He was being held without bail at Orient Road Jail today. He is charged with felony aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, felony obstructing an officer with violence, felony possession of cocaine, felony carrying a concealed firearm, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor criminal mischief, records state.
The arrest is a violation of his probation on a cocaine possession charge.
