ST. PETERSBURG - Rescue personnel had to extricate three passengers from a three-vehicle crash at 106th Avenue North and Fourth Street North about 6:15 this evening.
The passengers were in a 2000 Ford Escort that was so severely struck, according to team leader Lt. Phil Whitman, that "we had to remove the vehicle from around the patients."
"In order to insure the patients' safe removal, the doors and the roof had to be completely removed," Whitman said.
Firefighters used several Jaws of Life and other tools to free the crash victims.
After extrication, the three were taken to Bayfront Medical Center in stable condition, according to a report. Two other patients were treated at the scene.
Southbound traffic on Fourth Street was closed while the incident was investigated.
