TAMPA - Tampa Bay Tech junior guard Leria Jenrette could miss the rest of the girls basketball season after being stabbed on New Year's Eve.
Jenrette's father, Mike, would not go into the specifics about the incident because it is under investigation, but he confirmed that his daughter was stabbed in the lower back at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. She was taken to a local hospital but has been released, and she is recovering at home.
"It was serious and scary," Mike Jenrette said. "We're hoping she can return to school next week. But even if she gets cleared to play this season, as a parent, I might keep her out just to make sure she's OK."
Jenrette, who leads the state with 9.9 assists per game, had helped the Titans to a 9-1 start going into Tuesday's matchup against Freedom. She also was averaging 7.5 points, nine rebounds and 3.9 steals.
"From a playing standpoint, we'll obviously miss her, and we look forward to her return - whenever that may be," TBT coach Heather Glezen said. "But our main concern right now is Re Re's well-being and her getting better. She's lucky to be alive."
