LAND O' LAKES - How does one glimpse silence?
Thanks to Land O' Lakes artist Bradley Arthur, you don't have to wonder.
Pieces from the sculptor's Wordzworkx series will displayed at Tampa's three04 art gallery at 1906 N. Armenia Ave., Suite 211, Tampa. The opening reception is free and will run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.
"The works are related to each other and the concept of glimpsing silence," Arthur said. "That term kind of refers to a moment of complete connectedness and stillness that we can experience within ourselves, but it's not easy when there's so much information being bombarded at us.
"This is going to be like a reprieve from all that visual noise."
Arthur's work will be shown at the gallery through Feb. 6.
"Wordzworkx are his 90-degree angle word pieces that are on the wall; they create shadows and some kind of spark for conversation," said gallery owner Lisa Harasiuk. "There will be one piece on a pedestal in the middle of the room. It's 'Glimpsing Silence,' so he wants it to be minimal so you can kind of stand and take it all in."
Besides the three04 exhibit, Arthur recently learned that his sculpture, "Galactic Gladiator," a 20-foot tall work made from objects found in a Tampa junkyard, was chosen for a public exhibition that will open next week near the Franklin Street Mall and Cass Street in Tampa.
The public display was coordinated by Commercial Real Estate Women of Tampa.
"The name of the exhibition is 'Loud Sculpture,'" Arthur said. "They're all kinetic pieces. There are 12 chosen that will be out on the street for a year. They're trying to raise the awareness of art in Tampa."
A Miami native, Arthur's work can be seen across the Tampa Bay area and the state.
In 2001, he was chosen by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to build a pair of six-ton stars that stood roughly 10 feet tall and were placed at the sheriff's offices in Ybor City and Citrus Park. Bradley made them from melted guns collected in Hillsborough's Cease Fire program.
He also has two sculptures listed in the Smithsonian Institution's Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture.
Arthur will talk for about half an hour about his art at Friday's reception.
"His work is very clean and there's always something deeper in it," Harasiuk said. "It looks so clean and precisely done, like those pieces he did for the sheriff's office. It just fascinates me, the style of his work and how he relates it to sculpture so easily."
