BOSTON - Boston College fired Jeff Jagodzinski on Wednesday, days after he was warned of dismissal if he interviewed for the coaching job with the New York Jets.
BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo told Jagodzinski on Saturday his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with the Jets interview. Jagodzinski met with the Jets on Tuesday night.
A few hours later, at a Wednesday morning meeting lasting about 25 minutes, DeFilippo told Jagodzinski he was out.
"We're really good friends and this is a very difficult thing to do," DeFilippo, appearing despondent, said at a news conference. "We will find somebody who really wants to be at Boston College and will be here for the length of their contract."
Brown To Leave FSU For NFL
TALLAHASSEE - Florida State pass rusher Everette Brown is leaving school a year early for the NFL draft.
Brown led the Atlantic Coast Conference in sacks and tackles for loss this past season. He was a near-unanimous pick for the all-conference team and was a second-team All-American.
The school announced Brown's decision Wednesday.
A 6-foot-3, 245-pound redshirt junior from Stantonsburg, N.C., Brown will finish his Florida State career second in tackles for loss with 46 and fifth in sacks with 23.
GEORGIA: Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are leaving for the NFL draft.
Stafford, a junior, returned to campus from his family's home in Dallas to make the announcement. Moreno, a third-year sophomore, made the trip from Belford, N.J.
Georgia coach Mark Richt joined the two at a news conference.
Stafford and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford may be the two top quarterbacks in the draft, assuming Bradford also declares early.
LOUISVILLE: In a statement from the university, Coach Steve Kragthorpe says quarterback Matt Simms told him of his desire to transfer and said he wishes Simms the best. The release did not say where Simms would go.
Simms is the son of Phil Simms, the 1987 Super Bowl MVP and television sports broadcaster.
MARYLAND: Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.
Heyward-Bey ranks second in school history in career receiving yards (2,089), third in receptions (138) and tied for third in touchdown catches (13).
VIRGINIA: Junior wide receiver Kevin Ogletree is leaving to enter the NFL draft after leading the team with 58 reception this season.
Ogletree, of Queens, N.Y., finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in catches and third in receiving yards with 723.
YALE: Jacksonville Jaguars defensive assistant Tom Williams was introduced as the head football coach, making him the first African-American to hold the Yale job and only the second black coach in the Ivy League.
The 39-year-old Williams was blunt and succinct in outlining his goals at a news conference, the first being to win the Ivy League championship.
"And secondly, we're going to beat Harvard," Williams said, sparking applause and laughter. "We've got to turn 'The Game' back into a rivalry."
