Published: January 8, 2009

CLEVELAND - Eric Mangini is the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, a week after being fired by the New York Jets.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that Mangini will be introduced today at a news conference at the team's headquarters in Berea. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Mangini's contract has not been finalized.

Mangini reached an agreement on a four-year deal with the club Wednesday, the person said.

Mangini is represented by his father-in-law, sports agent Ron Shapiro.

The 37-year-old Mangini began his NFL career as a ballboy with the Browns in 1994 under then-coach Bill Belichick.

Mangini went 23-25 and made the playoffs once in three seasons with the Jets, who stumbled down the stretch to lose four of their last five games and miss the playoffs after an 8-3 start.

Cowboys Let Pacman Go

IRVING, Texas - Troubled cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was released by the Dallas Cowboys following a season in which he was suspended six games for an off-field fight.

The announcement came Wednesday, but the transaction will not become official until Feb. 9, the first day NFL teams can make waiver requests.

The Cowboys traded for Jones before the season even though he had been suspended for the 2007 season because of a series of off-field incidents.

Also, Dallas hired Jaguars assistant Joe DeCamillis to coach their special teams.

BRONCOS: Owner Pat Bowlen interviewed Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Wednesday for the head coaching job. Dolphins secondary coach Todd Bowles will visit with the team today.

CHIEFS: Former Chiefs boss Carl Peterson says he is not taking a job with Miami, ending speculation that began when he was seen at the Dolphins' playoff loss Sunday.

KEMP HAS CANCER: Jack Kemp, 73, the former housing secretary, congressman and Buffalo Bills quarterback, has been diagnosed with cancer, his office said. A statement said Kemp was undergoing tests to assess the origin of the disease and the treatment, but did not disclose the type of cancer.

LEGAL: Two felony charges against Vikings great Carl Eller are being dropped. A judge will rule on two lesser charges stemming from his clash with Minneapolis police in April.

SAINTS: The team confirmed running back Reggie Bush had surgery on his left knee, and will require months of rehabilitation. However, Bush is expected to be ready for minicamp in June.

Gary Gibbs, the Saints' defensive coordinator the past three years, was fired Wednesday.

SEAHAWKS: Greg Knapp is the new offensive coordinator, the first of many moves to be made by Seattle under new coach Jim Mora. A person familiar with the hire confirmed the 45-year-old Knapp will leave the Raiders to reunite with Mora, Knapp's former boss in Atlanta.
