A roofing company worker using a torch started a house fire about 12:30 p.m. today, a St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue official said.
The Old Time Roofing employee was working on a flat roof at the back of the home in the 4100 block of Third Avenue North when sparks ignited the overhang, firefighters said. Flames quickly spread to insulation, forcing firefighters to chop holes into the roof to reach the fire.
No damage estimate was available. The home is uninhabitable, firefighters said.
The owners were not home.
The Red Cross is helping the couple and their two children find a place to stay.
