ST. PETERSBURG - The man who was shot Wednesday in a robbery attempt that preceded a SWAT standoff used an alias when identifying himself to authorities, police said.
His real name is Jermaine Ross, 33, police said today. He told police he had been living as Ramon Flournoy to avoid getting arrested on a warrant charging him with violating his probation stemming from the suspension or revocation of his driver's license, police said this afternoon.
Ross was shot Wednesday as he was taking the trash out to the alley behind his home at 4390 Ninth Ave. N., police said. The shooting suspects were said to have fled to a nearby home occupied by nine people, prompting a SWAT team to respond, St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.
The canine officer who tracked the suspects saw one of them inside the home, Proffitt said. However, after the occupants emerged from the house and the SWAT team searched it, the suspects were not found.
Police say the suspects must have slipped away between the time the canine officer spotted the suspect inside and the arrival of additional officers. Three adults who had been in the home told News Channel 8 that none of the suspects was ever inside and could not have been because the doors were locked.
